I don't get to go to Wegman's very often. Delaware doesn't have any yet. But, there is one just across the Pennsylvania state line in Chadd's Ford. I had a doctor's appointment last Tuesday afternoon in nearby Media, PA. I figured that I had 15 minutes to quickly pick out some items at Wegman's. So, I'm looking at some refrigerated pasta when a blond female with her cart walks right in front of me. It was as if I wasn't there as she proceeded to look over the same items as me. After about 30 seconds, she jumps back, startled, and says "You scared me". I told her that I was sorry. She then tells me that we have to be so aware of our surroundings these days. In my mind, I'm playing back just how aware she has been with me. So, then I heard about how terrible things are in our country and the world...but, at least she felt safe that I wasn't a terrorist. I told her that I wouldn't have any idea what a terrorist looked like. She replied, "terrorists don't look like you or me", since we were both white. I then said to her, "Terrorists are determined by having a darker skin color?" She said, "Yes, they are the ones killing everyone". I then replied, "I don't like you right now!!!"
She continued to ramble about bad dark people. I mentioned the white guy who stabbed three people on the train in Portland, and the white guy who ran over two native Americans in Washington state and the white guy who killed 6 people in Orlando the previous week. She said she hadn't heard anything about these incidents. I told her that if she would stop watching Fox News, she might be more aware, and not only about her surroundings. She admitted that she did watch Fox, because that was where the truth was. She continued to ramble, but I had my opportunity to pick out my pasta items and run!!! I was amazed at how calm I was during this entire encounter, and to her credit, she was calm as well. I was pleased that I ate her bigotry for lunch on this afternoon.
