Recently, Donald Trump accused James Comey of being ‘cowardly’. From the safety of twitter. After Comey testified under oath in front of the Senate. I think this is what makes me the most frustrated, that for Trump’s supporters, somehow these two things are on a level. That what Comey said under oath, during two hours of intense questioning from senators of both political parties, and the 140 characters offered online by someone who still insists his inauguration crowds were the biggest ever, that these two things are somehow equivalent to each other. When Trump testifies under oath in front of the Senate, maybe we can start to take him seriously. Until then, his words, like most of what he says, are nothing but empty and comic braggadocio.
Trump is operating from a position of almost unlimited power and leverage, using the sort of vague plausible deniability employed by creepy, passive aggressive bosses everywhere, and Comey has nothing but his credibility built up over decades of public service under several different administrations, and yet, Trump thinks he’s the victim, that what is happening to him is somehow unjust. I would love to see Trump put his credibility on the line, but I just don’t think it will ever happen. Because there is a coward here. It’s just not Comey.
