Republican members of Congress think they can take health care away from tens of millions of people and remove pre-existing condition protections from more than 100 million Americans, all done with no debate, no review of the bill, and no input from the health care industry or advocates because they believe they will not suffer any consequences. They think the resistance is dead. Case in point: GOP Rep. Darrell Issa at an Orange County fundraising event in Irvine, California, over the weekend.
“They’re pathetic. There were almost none. There’s a couple million people in the surrounding communities and to have those few tells you the real momentum of this movement has really died. The same has been happening at our office where they come every Tuesday. There’s less every week.” -- Rep. Darrell Issa reacting to protesters at a GOP dinner, via the LATimes’ Seema Mehta.
Rep. Devin Nunes told the crowd the the resistance is a media conspiracy, or some other kind of nonsense:
“Every night there’s a news story that runs that … has something in common,” he said. “It’s anti-Trump, anti-Republican, and promotes this nonsense that you’re seeing with protesters everywhere. And they continue to promote it, which continues to promote violence. And you see the latest fiasco with, you know, cutting off Donald Trump’s head to attacking him on stage, or having a Julius Caesar play look like it’s him on stage. So, it didn’t surprise me, quite frankly.”
He was referring to one violent incident that did not take place anywhere near a town hall. Many of us are old enough to remember when these stickers were all the rage at the Conservative Political Action Conference, which is typically attended by every elected conservative politician:
They are so unbelievably out of touch with their constituents and their duty to represent all of their constituents, not only the supporters in their districts. Republicans feel emboldened to roll back every major step forward taken under President Obama—health care, national monument designations, Cuba relations, criminal justice reforms, all of it. And why? because they seriously do not believe they will pay at the ballot box. Consider this quote from House Speaker Paul Ryan last month. When asked about a possible wave election in 2018, Ryan’s response was literally “blah, blah, blah.”
Are Darrell Issa, Devin Nunes, and Paul Ryan right? Is the resistance dead and gone? If you are still out there, still fighting, why don’t you call your elected representatives at the number below and let them know that you’re still here, still wanting demanding they vote NO on the secretive health care bill. Let them know there will be consequences to their votes on Nov. 6, 2018, which is 505 short days from now. One last note: if you are interested in donating to help the eventual Democratic nominee in Rep. Darrell Issa’s district, click the fundraising thermometer below and show Issa the resistance isn’t going anywhere.
