Right now, as I write this, real-life American Nazis, fascists and other assorted right-wing lunatics are torturing, attacking and brutalizing people in Charlottesville VA. They are even attacking clergy.
Last week, somebody set off a bomb in a mosque near Minneapolis.
The response from Republican officials? Crickets. Notice I’m not asking for Trump to come out and say something. He didn’t about the mosque bombing and won’t for this. He’s the reason they are all out in force today to save a statue of Robert E. Lee.
Well, then, how about Virginia’s GOP candidate for Governor, Ed Gillespie (and he once ran the GOP). Where is he? I hear nothing from Ed. Republican Congressmen, Senators?
I’m not surprised really. When the birthers were out in force telling us that our first African-American President was not American — led by Donald Trump — they were noticeably silent on that too.
Some Republican talking heads on TV right now are saying that they are not speaking out because they are terrified of being primaried. Huh.
Here’s what I say to that. Republicans keep saying they are supposed to be about the US Constitution. You let these morons in the White House. You stay silent and they will eat your precious Constitution — 2nd Amendment and all.
Our Democrats will stand up against this and other hate crimes — as they should and normally do. There was a time not too long ago that Republicans of all sorts would be right beside them. Not today.
I expect nothing from Trump — he’s either intellectually incompetent or a crypto-fascist on his own. But for the rest of the GOP, that bar Trump sets is so low that it’s underground.
How sad is this: Either today’s Republican leaders in our national politics are complicit or they are cowards.
If we lose our democracy — we know who to blame, and it isn’t us.

Just an update as the day draws to a close here on the East Coast: As most of you know, we did hear from several Republicans, including the President. He condemned violence (OK) on Twitter, and then David Duke (Republican, Republican, Republican) attacked him. And Trump said nothing. Then he made an on camera statement and STILL refused to condemn the altright specifically. So that’s that. As to other GOP’ers, they said the right thing — but it took them hours. My original point still stands.
