There are lots of images coming out of the two alt-right, white supremacist, nazi rallies in Charlottesville, VA today and last evening. The klan had the good sense to wear sheets, but these people are brazen. Who has the technical skills to do image searches and track down these people? Who can put together internet squads to fight back against participants in their home communities, at their workplaces, and schools?
It needs to COST something to participate in the alt-right movement. We are not at a place (yet) where anyone but a tiny sliver of the population is OK with participation in these groups, and even the mainstream right (or what’s left of it) has reacted in strong terms to these rallies. We need to capitalize on this moment to make examples of participants, providing a deterrent to participation in alt-right movement for people who may be on the fence.
Find out who they are, call their employers, email their schools, blow up their parents’ twitter!
I don’t have the technical know-how to do this, but, strategically, I think it’s a good plan to take advantage of the copious images coming out of these rallies to put participants and potential participants of future alt-right actions on notice regarding the community backlash they will be exposed to if they do. Similarly, I think pressure should be brought to bear on tech platforms that facilitate hate rallies (why did facebook allow these rallies to be publicized in the first place?) and physical businesses and local governments that do not react forcefully against them.
Please — someone with better tech chops than i have, take this idea and RUN WITH IT! It’s entirely possible that if we don’t neutralize this movement now, the only way to fight them in the future will be in the streets.
