Welcome to the 607th original “Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day” profile, and we shouldn’t need long to briefly discuss Brian McDowell, a former candidate for the New Jersey State Assembly in 2016 who wanted to represent that state’s 1st District. His qualifications for office? He was a former contestant on Donald Trump’s “The Apprentice”. Uh huh. He apparently saw an opportunity to ride the coat tails of someone else’s presidential run to get enough name recognition and buzz to slither his way into a seat in the New Jersey state legislature, apparently forgetting that people in New Jersey kind of hate Donald Trump for all the damage he’s done to the economy of Atlantic City in the long run, what with bankrupting casinos and screwing over small business contractors. But I digress…
Less than a month after McDowell filed paperwork to run for office, video of him emerged shamelessly hitting on a woman, telling her, “Let me tell you right now. You should f*** me. It would really be good. Listen, you never know.” (This is ironically also the little-known original slogan for the Trump for President campaign.) Republican Party officials in New Jersey were immediately looking to push back and get McDowell off the ballot before he embarrassed them any further (and this was without knowing that Donald Trump’s “Access Hollywood” tape would be dropping in a few months).
McDowell wasn’t about to just surrender, but he never exactly gave an apology, instead making a statement that could best be classified as “making things worse”.
“There are human errors and even Jesus dropped the cross three times. I’m not running to be the pope. I’m running to make New Jersey more affordable.”
Pro-Tip: If you get caught as a politician telling women you just met they should f*** you, do not respond to criticism about it by comparing yourself to Jesus or the Pope. That’s… that’s not a healthy look.
Without any support from the New Jersey GOP, Brian McDowell finished third in the GOP Primary for the seat in the state assembly, getting only 1750 votes for 16% of the vote. As of about six weeks ago, he took a new job working in real estate with Island Realty Group. It doesn’t seem like he’ll be getting into politics anywhere soon, especially given New Jersey is leaning pretty blue these days after the embarrassing end of the career of Governor Chris Christie, and the insane presidency of Donald Trump, to whom McDowell will forever be linked.
