Right now, we have the chance to win three governors races where races are tight and the elections are just weeks away.
In VA and NJ, pro-environment candidates Ralph Northam and Phil Murphy are up against industry shills in just over a month. In OR, pro-environment Governor Kate Brown’s opponent just raised $1 million in the first month of his campaign, including from timbering interests intent on logging in Oregon’s state forests.
Today, we can determine whether three states advance pro-environment policy in spite of the Trump administration — or join him.
But we need to go all in with a significant “GreenStorm” of support to make sure these candidates can fight back against Big Polluter money.
I promise — we can win each of these races, but not unless we go big — and we have to do it now.
We can’t do it without you: Chip in just $5 directly to Northam, Murphy, or Brown’s campaigns today to help us meet our goal of $300,000 in the next 48 hours.
By pitching in for these critical state-level races together in the next 48 hours, we can push back on the catastrophic and irresponsible policies of the Trump administration and support environmental allies in states across the country who will protect the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the public lands we cherish. In these state races, grassroots money goes so far — and the election outcomes can make real change even while Republican-controlled Washington fails to act on climate.
Democrats and progressive candidates across the country are outperforming expectations since Trump’s election, so we know that these races are winnable.
In Virginia, despite Republican control of the legislature, Lieutenant Governor Northam and Governor Terry McAuliffe have led the charge in reducing carbon emissions and bolstering clean energy infrastructure. A Koch brothers group is spending over a million dollars to support Northam’s opponent, Ed Gillespie, and if Gillespie wins he’ll stop at nothing to reverse the progress we’ve made in the last four years. Even $5 will help Northam get his message out in this last month of the campaign and protect the progress he and McAuliffe have made.
In New Jersey, Phil Murphy is running to replace Chris Christie as governor. Murphy is committed to bringing New Jersey back into the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) and to getting New Jersey to 100% clean energy by 2050. He will be a strong leader to push back on the Trump administration’s attacks on the environment and make up for the damage Christie has done.
And in Oregon, anti-environment state Rep. Knute Buehler is rapidly building momentum to challenge Governor Kate Brown. Brown has been a climate champion, fighting for Oregon’s Clean Fuels Program and clean air for all Oregonians. She’s defended public lands from privatization, including Oregon’s Elliott State Forest, which will remain public because of her leadership. We can’t afford to look backward.
With Republican control in Washington, DC, we simply will not make environmental progress without more state action. Supporting these three candidates is how we win three states. That’s why we’re going all in. Are you with us?
Please, join the most significant show of grassroots support of the year today to counter Big Polluter money interfering in these elections. Donate to one or more of these candidates today.
The future of our country’s environmental legacy, for now, is in the states. Let’s empower states to fight climate change. Together, we will win in November.
Thank you,
Gene Karpinski
