For a long time I’ve considered Phil Och’s “Crucifixion” perhaps the greatest song ever written. To me, it seemed to express the deep patterns in the universe, society, and in an individual life. I am aware he wrote the “Crucifixion” in response to JFK’s assassination, but I have taken a slightly different approach, starting with JFK and moving on to his brother Robert and then jumping back in time to Martin Luther King, Jr. My idea was to emphasize the repeated patterns and cycles mentioned in the song. I realize that means I have violated chronology, and a couple of the images are completely anachronistic, but the narratives seemed to unfold more naturally in this order (I really haven't tried to be strictly chronological). I chose Jim and Jean’s version because I like it, because of their personal connection to Phil, and because they enunciate the words fairly clearly, which you sort of need for a song of such lyrical complexity. Frankly, I didn’t think I could get the distance from the subject that I would need to compiled and edit the slide show properly if I used one of Phil’s. I think it turned out reasonably well, although unquestionably falling short of doing full’s justice to Phil’s lyrics and Jim and Jean’s arrangement. The final decision of yours, of course.
