Trump’s big border wall is a bad idea — it’s an ineffectual waste of money and bad for the environment where it will be built.
But, the wall is not nearly as important as renewing CHIP (done), protecting the Dreamers (DACA), and a variety of other issues facing our country and its citizens and occupants.
Trump’s Wall is symbolic to him and his base. It’ll be ineffectual if built — it can be burrowed under, and won’t be built in rough terrain or over water (per Trump’s own admission). It won’t keep out many refugees, nor any visitors overstaying their visas.
The people that the wall will really stop are the people we shouldn’t be encouraging anyway — those who are crossing dangerous and deadly terrain, with or without scammy ‘coyotes’ to ‘help’. People die, often, during attempts to cross the border via the southwest terrain.
In short, the concessions on the wall are environmental, financial, and symbolic ones...none to ignore, but I can think of multiple more pressing and important items under each of those categories. And if Dems can use it to push Trump into signing the best bills possible (especially if we have control of Congress), it shouldn’t be off the table.
