Here’s why Republicans are running on racism and scary Democratic women and the "angry mob" and racist fear of immigrants: because they have no positive message to offer. Their tax overhaul was supposed to be that positive message, but it turns out that voters saw through that one. A giant tax cut to corporations and rich people just wasn’t enough to propel Republicans to an easy 2018 election season, even if fear and hatred ultimately help them out.
President Donald Trump tried to steer the conversation back to tax cuts on Saturday, telling reporters that the White House and congressional leaders are working on "a very major tax cut for middle-income people. And if we do that it would be some time I would say just prior to November."
But, if anything, his remarks sparked confusion, since Congress is out of session until after the November election and can’t act before then.
Nice try making taxes work for Republicans this election, but you took your big shot and used it to make the rich richer. And voters saw what you did. Time to face some consequences.
It's all a long way from December, when jubilant Republicans expected their newly-passed legislation to carry them through the midterm elections. “If we can’t sell this to the American people, we ought to go into another line of work,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
That’s not the only reason you ought to go into another line of work, Mitch, but if it’s the reason that works for you … well, time to take your own advice.
