It was but a picture in the mind. I do not know what is happening. The reason of my waking mind tells me that great evil has befallen and we stand at the end of days.
But my heart says nay; and all my limbs are light, and a hope and joy are come to me that no reason can deny. . . [I]n this hour I do not believe that any darkness will endure!

And darkess didn’t endure. But Tolkien understood that darkess is not defeated by apathy.
I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories .... The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened?
But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.
There’s some good in this world ... And it’s worth fighting for.
Samwise Gamgee, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, J.R.R. Tolkien
