In my youth we celebrated Armistice Day on November 11 — the day that effectively ended the first World War. For the second World War we also had VE Day --Victory in Europe—; and VJ Day --Victory over Japan.
My father was on a troop ship crossing the Atlantic Ocean when the Armistice was signed, and so he was spared the horrors of trench warfare; although given the many German submarines prowling the ocean at the time, a troop ship was not safe, Armistice notwithstanding.
Be that as it may, and intending no disrespect to those veterans — including my father’s youngest brother— who served in the second World War, and in subsequent wars and conflicts, in my family we celebrate Armistice Day.
