• Drove a man to the polls personally. He was hanging out in the front yard of a house on my list & thought he couldn't vote because he hadn't registered since the last election. I looked him up online and confirmed that he was still registered. He apparently moved to Greensboro from another part of the county a few months ago and is currently on a waiting list for housing assistance. As far as I can tell he's currently crashing with someone else.
• A woman was pulling out of her driveway as I approached. She asked me if I could tell her where her polling place is, since she had gone where it was previously and was told it wasn't her location. I was able to look it up for her and send her on her way.
• Rained off and on. Fortunately I'd brought a raincoat (though not a very good raincoat) and a ball cap.
• An older couple invited me in just after the rain got heavier. They'd already voted, and the woman wondered if I had another "I Voted" sticker because her husband had lost his -- I told them I didn't have one. They offered me a banana, which I turned down at first, but eventually took to avoid being rude.
• A bit later in the same neighborhood a woman answered her door and said she thought I'd spoken with her parents already. She asked me if they'd given me a banana. It was still in my pocket!
• At one house where no one was home, I heard a disturbing intermittent buzzing from a transformer atop a power pole. I took the time to call Duke Energy and report it. I let them know that the sound had stopped, and it was probably caused by the rain, so make sure to check it out even if it wasn't making any noise. Owners may have never noticed if they're not outside when it's wet. Figured as a middle class white dude asking working class black folks to vote, the least I could do is be a good neighbor and try to circumvent a blown transformer.
• A man on my list is an invalid. The younger man in the house with him (his son?) asked me if there were any way he could absentee vote. Unfortunately I had to tell them that absentee ballots had to be requested earlier.
Resting up and drying out for a bit, then hoping to get back out there for another shift in a bit.
