Florida Highway Patrol has reported multiple deaths. First responders are on scene, injured who can be reached have been transported to hospitals, but many are still believed to be trapped under concrete debris.
The bridge had been installed only last Saturday. However, construction crews were actively working on the structure at the time of collapse. One worker is believed to have died at the scene. It was installed, using Accelerated Bridge Construction methods, to prevent further student injuries and deaths when attempting to cross the 6-lane divided highway to reach the campus.
It is a high-tech construction, utilizing self-cleaning concrete that degrades biological growths and stains through the action of sunlight.
Costing $14.2M, it was funded by the US Department of Transportation.
