House Republican leadership has been forced, again, to postpone a vote on immigration, again. Because we are governed by malignant incompetents. And because the most malignant and most incompetent person is occupying the Oval Office, all bets are now off that Congress will deal with immigration before the election.
After the defeat of the Goodlatte bill, the total white supremacist Trump wish-list bill, it became clear that the alternative bill didn't have the votes it needed to pass, either. Republicans have been looking to the White House to give them cover, needing to know that Trump would have their backs when they took what was likely to be a hard vote. As of about six o'clock Thursday night, leadership was sure they could round up the necessary votes by today, Friday. Fifteen minutes later, it was postponed until sometime next week.
Now, who knows? Rep. Mark Sanford (R-SC) says it's "Game Over." Speaker Paul Ryan needed Trump to stay on message for 18 hours, needed Trump to continue to woo members, letting them know that he wasn't going to blow things up by rejecting the bill after they took tough votes to pass it. He was asking Trump to stay on message for 18 hours when Trump can't stay on message for 18 minutes. Case in point:
So there you go. It's a waste of time to do anything on immigration. Oh, and it's all the Democrats' fault that we're in a crisis, but the crisis isn't real. It's "phony stories of sadness and grief," but he hates "the children being taken away." Which is totally the Democrats' fault.
Good luck with that, Republicans. You totally deserve it.
