Where are you in your emotional landscape today?
Are you angry, depressed, despairing, hopeful, defiant or charged up? Do you want to scream, blame, organize, write, retreat, reflect, persevere, help, donate or just mercilessly mock all absurdities? You can observe all those energies (and much much more!) being played out all over the site right now. Wherever you are on the emotional spectrum today, let’s buck each other up.
Here’s a tweet I keep coming back to:
Below I offer just one of many metaphorical lenses to view all of these turbulent emotions through: the Five Element view.
Wood Element:
If you’re feeling Wood right now you want to fight. If you’re angry then find a way to act on that anger, because it’s a powerful energy that contains the seeds of change. A seed is buried deep underground all winter long has to get mad to push aside the heavy earth and burst forth into new life. Wood is the General that confidently pushes aside past obstacles and leads its supporters into battle. Don’t get lost in anger; it has to be focused. Don’t fight with the people on your side or heap blame on them for how we got here: Lead us forward. (After all, who is the General of Connect Unite Act?)
We need Wood’s anger and leadership.
Metal Element:
If you’re feeling Metal right now you want to analyze and clarify. Metal’s power is the sword that cuts through all the bullshit. Metal hardens and sharpens and becomes more tempered and refined under stress. Metal uses the considerable force of its intellect and grasp of history and never stops hammering away at basic truths. We need people who rigorously defend equality and accept nothing less than justice for all.
We need Metal’s intellectual precision and clarity.
Water Element:
If you’re feeling Water right now you want to reflect and persevere. Water’s ultimate power is in its patience and persistence. Water prevails by wearing down every adversary. Water in the form of waves relentlessly break rocks into sand, while water in the form of rain washes mountains away, and we are all drops in the universal flow. The arc of the moral universe is long but it bends towards justice.
We need Water’s perseverance and trust in the long game.
Earth Element:
If you’re feeling Earth right now you want to help, even though you may be feeling overwhelming despair at how our norms, institutions, environment and even families are being wantonly ripped asunder. People feeling Earth go to ground when stressed and take care of their own, but they are also the people who open their hearts and homes and wallets. They take in foster babies and refugees and hide runaway slaves. They donate money and time and make you soup and give their hearts to those in need of healing. If all you want to do right now is hold your family and friends close then please do so. If you’re in Earth right now trust your gut, because your body will never lie to you.
We need Earth’s empathy that nourishes and holds us all together.
Simply look with perceptive eyes at the world about you
and trust to your own reactions and convictions.
~~ Ansel Adams
Fire Element:
If you’re feeling Fire right now you want to be dramatic. You want to grab ‘em by the eyeballs. Fire revels in drama and the fight and acting up and acting out. If I can’t dance to it it’s not my revolution! People feeling Fire are the stage actors and comedians and entertainers and happy warriors (on the outside, anyway) who take to twitter or TV or the treetops while using humor and satire and mockery and savagely in-your-fucking-face metaphors that shake people up and make them think while they’re laughing or crying.
We need Fire’s exhuberance and energy that reminds us of the joy of life itself.
What are you feeling the most strongly today?
What do you want to talk about today?
