The family and I finally moved out of Maine and finally got down to North Carolina. We headed to the DMV to get new ID’s and register to vote on Friday. After a five hour wait it was done. I’ve been registered since1984 and this is the first time there is a “D” next to my name. Don’t tell my dad – he’s been teasing me about it for 34 years.
I haven’t voted for a Republican since papa Bush in 1992 but still kept that “R” in place through three moves and registrations. Partly because I wanted to try to get moderate fiscal conservatives in the party but in the last 20 years mostly because I’ve liked messing with their polls.
I’ll admit it wasn’t Trump that drove me away, Bush junior –pretty much wiped out any hope of me supporting a Republican again (not that I supported him – the stupid was just too strong with that one). It was Bernie who brought me over – I was so inspired by his positions and his passion I even started donating to his primary campaign and other progressive candidates. I even held my nose and voted for Hillary (though I voted for Obama quite willingly). I decided after the primary messing with polls wasn’t enough and I needed to be able to actually support and vote for someone who inspired me. So there I sat at the DMV and when the question was asked, after only a brief pause, I said democrat.
Between my wife and kids there are four more democratic votes here in NC now – not sure what will come of them yet but I guess it’s a start.
