UPDATE:
I just watched. The preview I saw on Amy Goodman did not prepare me for what I just saw. I was riveted.
White supremacists, by whatever name they are identified, are very much alive and well, getting larger, and have not gone anywhere.
After Charlottesville, my sense was that the murder that occurred led many of the groups to fall back and re-group a bit. All they have done is quiet down, and perhaps slip into the shadows. But the Portland, OR and Providence, RI events of the past week-end are evidence that they are back, and they are to be feared. Their message and presence is to be resisted and fought. Several bad actors from Charlottesville have been outed and a Marine has been ousted from the service and a defense industry worker with a security clearance has been terminated from his position. Nowhere did tonight’s story evince any particular concern from any officials, companies, police departments, or NGO entities as to the growth in America of a movement that has already done things in public that the KKK did only in the dead of night, in secret.
Charlottesville was not a march, a protest, a free speech event, an assembly to protest a southern statue’s being taken down. It was a crime scene, according to A.C. Thompson, the producer/reporter. The violence was pre-programmed; some of it directed toward specific people. The police stood idly by.
Tonight’s Frontline (which was announced as Episode 1 in a series) story was chilling. They definitely believe they have Trump’s blessing. He knows they are bad PR and will publicly say what he has to say, but I believe he supports them.
What has become of America.
