Donald Trump has trained his supporters well—forget about truth and reality, just live in your tidy little bubble and tune out all that other crap. So as Republicans try desperately to goose their turnout numbers in order to offset an energetic Democratic base, they're having a little trouble piercing the obliviousness, so to speak.
The New York Times reports a political group aligned with Trump, America First Action, is warning that voter turnout might not be so hot for Republicans after it convened a series of focus groups over the summer. The GOP base simply refuses to buy into all that mainstream media mumbo-jumbo that Democrats might prevail this fall.
Conservative-leaning voters in the study routinely dismissed the possibility of a Democratic wave election, with some describing the prospect as “fake news,” said an official familiar with the research.
Ha! Now that would be some sweet justice—all Trump’s demonizing of the press coming back to bite the GOP in the butt. Republican lawmakers now view depressed turnout among their base as the #1 threat to their congressional majorities while wooing independents has become an afterthought. That's why all their ads are base-targeted fearmongering and attack campaigns that have provably backfired among swing voters in several elections since Trump took office.
