This is not a troll or a rhetorical question. It’s something I’d be interested in hearing ideas about. When Ford sent her letter to Eshoo and then Feinstein and wanted confidentiality, what was her motivation? What did she expect to happen? Did she want Feinstein simply to know? Feinstein was a no vote anyway. Did she want others on the judiciary committee to know? If so, how did she expect that to happen and remain anonymous? I can’t think of how such a charge could be investigated without the investigators knowing who the people involved are (is it possible — anyone who has expertise in investigations like this?). If there wasn’t any way for her accusations to influence Kavanaugh’s confirmation process unless she was identified, and if she didn’t want to be identified, then why did she bother? Perhaps according to the timeline here: talkingpointsmemo.com/… she hadn’t made up her mind about eventually being identified at the time she sent the letter.
It’s always possible, even likely, that the news doesn’t have the full story, but I can’t see how a charge like this could have any influence on the process if made anonymously and especially if only revealed to one senator.
[Note that I’m not asking why she would want to remain anonymous. Those reasons are pretty clear as fully borne out by what’s happened to her since her name was revealed and apparently was her preference when she decided not to go public in August.]
[update — title edited because it had a meaning I didn’t intend. I don’t mean “she should expected this.” I do mean, what were the steps she expected Feinstein to take and how did she anticipate her information affecting the nomination if she were anonymous. I hope the new title better conveys this]
