By every indication, Brett Kavanaugh is/was a cad. I say “is” because he so clearly could have stopped all this nonsense by being honest in the beginning. With that thought I have three questions.
1. Why didn’t Kavanaugh say something like this when the first allegation of misconduct/sexual abuse arose? “I do not remember the incident in question, but I am so sorry if I caused anyone harm through my actions. I was a dumb teenager and did many things I am not proud of now that I’m a grown man. I apologize to Professor Ford and anyone else if my actions caused you distress.”
How do you think that kind of apology would have played? Do you think it would have nipped things in the bud?
2. What kind of conversations do you think Kavanaugh is having at home with his own girls right now? As the father of girls, do you think that Kavanaugh actually looks back on his behavior and prays his own daughters won’t end up at parties with boys like him?
I heard a commentator on MSNBC today say that her daughter has two sons and she is raising them to be respectful of women. Do you think Kavanaugh is teaching his daughters how to fight off men? Did you happen to notice how pissed his wife looked during the Fox interview? Does she know something we don’t?
3. Do all people do stupid stuff in high school for which we should excuse them later in life?
I was a high school teacher for over 30 years. All high school students aren’t awful, reckless people. We worked hard as a staff to help our students understand that decisions have consequences. For my last few years before retirement I worked with seniors to try and help them get over their last hurdles toward graduation. I can’t tell you how many times I heard students lament about poor decisions they made as freshman or sophomores and how hard it has been correcting them. They learned their lessons fairly quickly but still had a lot to pay. What has bothered me most about Kavanaugh is how entitled he acts as if his whole life has been golden and up until now he has never had to pay for the consequences of his his past. What do you think about how best to handle things that come up from our past.
