This will probably get lost in the Kavanaugh hustle today, but Minnesota Public Radio is reporting that Keith Ellison has called for the House Ethics Committee to investigate the allegations against him by an ex-girlfriend of domestic abuse.
His statement was apparently first given to Buzzfeed News.
Ellison resigned his Congressional seat and is running for Attorney General of Minnesota. The abuse allegations have garnered much attention in the campaign. Karen Monahan alleges that Ellison dragged her off of the bed by her feet during an argument and that he has verbally/emotionally abusive in their relationship.
I do not want to litigate the case here, but I do want to point out the contrast between Ellison’s call for an investigation into himself and the circus that is Kavanaugh nomination process including the refusal of the Trump Administration and the Republicans to call for an FBI investigation into the now numerous allegations of abuse that have been leveled at Kavanaugh. You can argue that Ellison could have and should have called for this investigation earlier, but he has called for an investigation now, and the difference with the Republican approach to the allegations against Kavanaugh, Jim Jeffords, and Trump, if not others, is stark.
