Perhaps it’s a case of the blind, tonedeaf, and dumber liking the same ilk. Trump has announced his (nose)pick to replace ‘Bart’ (“Urrrp!”) Kavanaugh on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. She is Neomi Rao, currently head of the White House Office of (Dis)Information and (Un)Regulatory Affairs.
Rao has never served as a judge before. Not sure whether she even has a law degree, or passed the bar (a state one, not those serving liquor.) But why would ignorance, inexperience, or lack of qualifications bother Trump, who never had any experience in elective office before becoming president. According to Politico, Rao is also on his short list for SCOTUS if he gets another nomination. (Pray for RBG and the other liberal justices.)
But Rao is under fire for past writings about topics ranging from date rape “hysteria” (Just Stay Sober, Girls,) to race (“Yale has dedicated itself to a relatively firm meritocracy, which drops its standards only for a few minorities, some legacies and a football player here and there,”) multi-culturalism (“"Multiculturalists are not simply after political reform. Underneath their touchy-feely talk of tolerance, they seek to undermine American culture,") and homosexuality (“People who tolerate women in the workplace, and blacks and Hispanics as neighbors, view homosexuality as a behavior – and behaviors, unlike gender and race, are subject to change.")
Although these writing were done in the 1990’s, Rao has never retracted them, and they are widely considered as disqualifying for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench. But that has never stopped Trump; in fact, he likes and feels more comfortable with incompetence; opposition only makes him more determined.
Let’s hope Rao is his Harriet Miers. At least Miers was a lawyer.
