Slate reports that, as Trump has been dragging the country through the mud, his administration has been working behind the scenes to erode protection for victims of domestic violence. The law & order President now views domestic violence through the lens of the criminal code. Ignoring the complexity of domestic violence, the Trump administration has narrowed its definition to those acts that result in a misdemeanor or felony.
Controlling behavior, yelling, shouting, name calling, shaming, isolating one from friends & loved ones- recognized signs of domestic violence- were not considered & integrated into the revised definition. The threat to funding for shelters & programs that support victims are real.
This is is a very personal issue for me, my sister’s life depended on having a place to escape the abuse she & her son suffered on a daily basis. I feel sickened to think that victims of domestic violence will not be comprehensively served. But, why would we expect anything different from the Abuser & Chief?
