There’s been a lot of concern about attacks and unity about Democratic candidates. I think everyone agrees that the primaries need to be competitive, but not negative. We absolutely need to unify as a a party behind the final nominee. I’m not saying to rush anything: I don’t want people who support another candidate to feel rushed or pushed out. And we ALL want to get rid of Trump.
I do have a couple of favorites, but I want to hear what everyone else thinks first. I don’t know much about Beto O’Rourke, but lots of people seem to like him and I want to know why.
So let’s practice being positive! Write a little pitch for your preferred candidate or candidates and why you like them. It could be anything from their foreign policy experience to their ability to engage with social media. I know some people will think we should engage critically, but there are dozens of other diaries for “positive criticism.” I want to enjoy talking about our candidates in a positive way. Bonus: if a Republican starts busting on a Democratic candidate, you’ll have a positive story to counter it.
Give me cupcakes and unicorn farts, ok?
Quick ground rules:
1. Don’t run down or compare other candidates negatively.
DO: “I think s/he’s the best candidate to beat Donald Trump, because...”
(Feel free to chime in if you’ve got something nice to say about someone who isn’t your pick).
DON’T: “I think he’d be better than X because X is too [fill in disqualifier of your choice].”
2. Respond all you like, but in a positive way.
DO: “Yes, I agree! S/he really impresses me with his/her...”
DON’T: “Yeah, but s/he’ll never win, because...”
3. Anyone counts. Anyone. If you think we should draft Oprah or Michelle Obama, go for it.
Let’s go!
And remember, unicorns!
