Many right wing news sources (daily mail, fox, examiner, PJ, etc.), which I will not be linking to, have grasped a new straw in an attempt to smear Warren. The key claim they are making is that, while recently she has reported having to leave a teaching position due to being pregnant, in a 2008 interview she stated that she had to take extra classes to have the correct credentials and that was why she left that position. They are calling this a ‘lie’.
They point to a 2008 video of Warren, and the transcript of the relevant section (around 6:43) is as follows:
Warren: “...I worked with the children with disabilities. And I did that for a year, and then that summer I actually didn’t have the education courses, I was on an emergency certificate, it was called, and I went back to graduate school and took a couple of courses in education and said ‘I don’t think this is going to work out for me’, and I was pregnant with my first baby. So, I had a baby”
In the third debate, and probably in stump speeches, she has said:
But at the end of that first year, I was visibly pregnant. And back in the day, that meant that the principal said to me -- wished me luck and hired someone else for the job.
So, I may be reading between the lines here but this does not look like a ‘lie’ to me. It looks to me like in 2008 she didn’t want to talk about the real reasons she had had to leave her job as a teacher, while in 2019 she is more than ready to talk about it. I’m making a logical leap here, and I assume she will make some kind of comment eventually, but this seems like exactly the kind of stretch the right wing media would use to try to smear her. I haven’t seen this being picked up elsewhere yet but I will be watching for it.
