Like many today I reacted in horror and disgust to President Trump’s racist, callous and manipulative response to the tragedy in New Zealand. I was encouraged by the outrage of many commentators and politicians. His use of white nationalist code words like “invasion” was appalling even for him. The fact that today of all days Trump would say that white nationalism is not a big problem demanded a forceful response.
So I went looking for statements from our 2020 candidates to replace him, and I have to say that I was generally disappointed. I do not have a candidate yet, but I ache for someone who will stand up to this menace. Across the board what I saw was heartfelt statements of support and regrets. I saw strong condemnations of white nationalism.
Some may say that it is too soon, the horror too fresh to be political. Yet, Trump is making it political in the most craven way by giving a big wink to his radical base. This type of evil has got to be called out directly. To beat Trump in 2020 our candidate is going to have to confront him directly every time he goes to that dark place.
I understand that it is very tough. Consultants are probably telling the candidates to be positive and ‘keep their powder dry.’ Forget that! We need a fighter this time. Hell, we need twelve fighters!
Today Jay Inslee went there. He said that Trump should be “removed from office” for his disgraceful remarks. That’s what I needed to hear. I gave Inslee $100.
Let me know if you found any other candidates’ response compelling. I’m ready to support all the fighters. This is one we have to win.
