“I would totally go with treating it (abortion) like any other crime up to and including hanging -- which kind of, as I said, I’m kind of squishy about capital punishment in general, but I’ve got a soft spot for hanging as a form of capital punishment. I tend to think that things like lethal injection are a little too antiseptic” says Kevin Williamson, “pro-lifer” extraordinaire (link) . After Media Matters dug up this quote Mr.Williamson’s short gig with Atlantic Monthly came to a screeching halt. (link)
Our boy Kevin subsequently wrote a non-apology article for the Washington Past in which he averred that his “hanging” comment was a long time ago, four years, and on a blog. In corporate media jibber jabber this is called “walking it back.” Walking this one back would be as difficult as hoisting Mount Everest onto one’s back and making it to London before Brexit.
“Pro-life” politicians In the U.S. have not gone so far as to suggest hanging, but their frustration at their inability to get rid of abortion and other forms of birth control once and for all, has led then to expose their true intentions. Until recently Louisiana had the most extreme trigger abortion law. A trigger law is one that would go into effect after Roe is overturned. In a post-Roe Louisiana, if a woman learns her 12 year old daughter has been raped and gives the girl a chemical abortion, the mother can be sentenced to 10 years hard labor and fined $100,000.
Riled up by the possibilities of Kavanaugh and outraged by NY state’s enshrinement of Roe, abortion trigger laws and other Draconian abortion laws are proliferating across the heartland like a prairie fire. Governor Kemp in Georgia had promised his right wing the toughest abortion law in the land, and he said recently that he would deliver on the 10 years of prison and $100,000 fine. Alas, there is no hard labor in Georgia. Perhaps he can bring back chain gangs.
And for the gentleman with visions of women swinging in the breeze, Roy Moore has been instrumental in delivering for Alabama a Personhood Amendment, which gives equal gives civil rights to a fertilized egg and a pregnant woman. Abortion, and many other forms of birth control will be murder in Alabama if Kavanaugh delivers.
Once the general public becomes aware of these laws, “right to lifers” will be exposed for the misogynists they have always been.
