And his parents still refused to vaccinate him.
A six-year-old boy fell while playing on an Oregon farm. He cut his forehead, and a week later developed tetanus. He had to be airlifted to a hospital, where he spent two months, including 47 days in the ICU, 39 days on a ventilator, and 49 days with a tracheostomy. The cost was almost a million dollars.
He was given the tetanus vaccine as part of his treatment, but his parents refused to let him get the second dose recommended by doctors, or any of the other vaccinations recommended for a child his age.
This is the first case of tetanus in a child in Oregon in over 30 years.
...Thanks to the vaccine, cases of this infection have decreased by 95 percent and deaths by 99 percent since the 1940s.
