On Tax Day, Republicans were trying to highlight the benefits of their extremely unpopular tax law with a set of carefully planned press releases, op-eds, and videos. Donald Trump apparently didn't get the message.
Trump spent Monday offering sage advice to Boeing, calling for investigations of his political opponents, attacking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Ilhan Omar, and, of course, ranting about immigration. Lots of ranting about immigration.
“We can retake the House, I think, over this issue . . . As soon as we do, we’re going to get this straightened out,” Trump said. But according to the National Republican Congressional Committee’s 2018 communications director, “As we saw in 2018, immigration will inflame both sides. Those folks will never be moved. However, in swing districts in Texas, Florida and California, that debate hurt us.”
Hatred and divisiveness have taken Donald Trump a long way, but he also helped Democrats retake the House in 2018, and he just keeps going back to the same message—even when it steps on his party’s economic message on Tax Day.
