Sometimes, whether it is politically advantageous or not, a leader has to take a stand. This is one of those times. Watch her clear-eyed, honest, direct statement:
I honestly don’t know whether it will help or hurt Warren’s campaign for president to be the leader on this issue, but I do know that it shows real bravery. She is correct. The Mueller report clearly establishes:
1. A hostile foreign government illegally interfered with the 2016 US election to help Donald Trump.
2. Trump welcomed the interference on his behalf.
3. Trump illegally obstructed efforts to investigate the criminal behavior.
4. Because of policy not to indict a sitting president, Mueller chronicled Trump’s illegal behavior and then passed the responsibility to prosecute to Congress through impeachment proceedings.
Accordingly, it is the duty of Congress now to take up impeachment proceedings. To ignore this responsibility is to condone illegal acts by the president, which undermines the principle that no one is above the law. Nothing less than our system of the rule of law and representative democracy is at stake.
Warren recognizes that no matter what the politics of a matter may be, sometimes you just need to do the right thing. While others may be carefully weighing the ‘appropriate’ or ‘safe’ response, she is leading.
We are at a point of existential danger to our democracy. We need a strong leader to turn the tide of authoritarianism. Warren is demonstrating that she may be that leader.
