This made me laugh out loud. As Politico put it, the GOP is vowing to "crush" Roy Moore's candidacy for Senate in 2020, which he just announced today. Of course, the basis for the GOP's position is less about the fact that Moore is a wacky theocratic child predator and mostly about the fact that they don't believe he can win. The math for Democrats to turn the Senate blue becomes much more difficult if they can't hold onto the seat they currently hold by virtue of Doug Jones' shocking defeat of Moore in a 2017 special election in deep red Alabama.
So Republicans are already going all out to try to strangle Moore’s efforts to win the GOP nomination for that seat and are trying to recruit former Senator Jeff Sessions to jump into the race. Sessions, racist house elf and former Attorney General, has given no indication that he wants his old seat back. And given the fact that he spent his time at the Justice Department being pissed on by Donald Trump more than a Moscow hotel mattress, it’s hard to see how Sessions will be all that excited to share a ballot with him.
A number of current GOP Senators have already weighed in against Moore’s candidacy, including Majority Whip John Thune, current Alabama Senator Richard Shelby and a handful of Republicans up for reelection in 2020 including Cory Gardner, Jon Cornyn and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Arizona Republican Senator Martha McSally dropped this whopper when being told of Moore’s announcement:
Give me a break. This place has enough creepy old men.
That’s probably the best description of the GOP Senate majority I can think of. But this is truly an example of reaping what you sow. Maybe Republicans should take a look in the mirror to figure out why a disgustoid crackpot like Moore feels at home in their party and why he has an excellent chance of winning the nomination for the seat thanks to the rabid right-wing, cuckoo for cocoa puffs Christian fascists who make up a large percentage of GOP voters in Alabama—voters that the Republican Party invited in with open arms and has been cultivating for decades. The chickens have come home to roost, and Republicans deserve to be identified with the horror show of a human being that is Roy Moore. He is them.
