Photo from a series in the Guardian of pianos in abandoned spaces...kind of feeling like that. In high school my friends and I all read Brave New World (cool) and 1984 (creepy). We didn’t realize that BNW was pretty creepy too. But those seemed like the only choices in 1964. By the 80s it seemed that BNW was a reality in the West and 1984 was a reality in the East. But then came 1989-1991 and the end of Soviet domination in Eastern Europe and the breakup of the Soviet Union itself. So what do we get now? Fascist tyranny in Russia, China, Hungary, Poland, and most of the rest of the world. Tyrannies like The Handmaid’s Tale or Boko Haram or Saudi Arabia or increasingly India and Indonesia and the Philippines, with no rights for women...Small islands of sanity in an increasingly insane world — France, Germany, Scandinavia, Canada, New Zealand...Mose Allison — ‘Stop This World, Let Me Off’
