This one is really going to be pretty short. This morning, we had a front page story on Castro suspending his campaign. [Noted: edited to fix missing link and incomplete sentence]
But I can’t help but notice that he never, ever scored in the Daily Kos straw poll at anywhere near the rock bottom. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders have dominated those polls for months and months. So seeing all the comments from people here saying what a shame it is that Castro dropped out and what a loss it is seems somehow less than sincere to me. Or, more broadly, the complaint that our remaining first tier candidates are all white. Well, guess what? That’s who we’ve supported here on Daily Kos — the two white progressive candidates, Warren and Sanders. So doing that while complaining that the non-white candidates are all dropping out is just ridiculous.
Apparently, someone else was supposed to keep supporting Castro, Harris, and Booker while we all chased our lilly-white progressive dream candidates? Loosely, I pretty much translate those comments as meaning this:
“It’s a shame that other people didn’t support these non-white candidates; I hate to see them drop out because that makes us look bad, even though I didn’t support any of them myself. But I’d hope that others would have helped give us the illusion of racial inclusiveness while I support either the old white guy (Sanders) or the old white lady (Warren) while complaining about how white our surviving candidates are.”
If you truly believe that Sanders or Warren are the best candidates, then own that and don’t pretend that you’re sad that the minority candidates are dropping out. After all, it’s not like you wanted one of them to actually win. And if you’re still unhappy with the ethnic breakdown of our surviving candidates, maybe it would be worth a little introspection and examine why it is that the overwhelming majority of us here were (and are) supporting the two white progressives.
