Even some of my scientist friends call me “Dr Death”
But I quit trying to Kum by Yah your ass a long time ago. The Doomsday clock has now been moved forward to 100 seconds. And, yes, the Cheeto faced Maggot is one reason. What was it some one wrote?- having iMpotus as president is like being tied to a chair while a toddler waves a loaded gun and dances around you.
But besides his stubby fingers itching way too close to a big red button, there is the fact of his and a myriad of others who simply can no longer accept that the days of “I’m entitled to whatever the fuck I feel like doing or buying because man, I earned it ! ] are - or should be-receding in our bicycle mounted rear view mirrors.
We just set a new record for highest CO2 in humanity’s history at 415.79 parts per million…Last May, we crossed 415 ppm for the first time ever. That record topped the previous one, which we hit just three months prior. We never even crossed 400 ppm before2015….https://twitter.com/CO2_earth?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1220046036720332806&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fearther.gizmodo.com%2Fajax%2Finset%2Fiframe%3Fid%3Dtwitter-1220046036720332806%26autosize%3D1
Ditto extent of Arctic sea ice melt. Ditto deep ocean heat content. And atmospheric methane and fuoroforms. And NO2. And earth temperature….. Seeing any trends?
Now- the UN’s Emissions Gap report last Nov says we essentially need to cut GHG by 80% over the next 10 years to avoid the “destructive” track we currently are sliding on down to the cliff’s edge . wedocs.unep.org/... unfortunately there is a “production gap” that basically hardwires in a bleak future in fossil fuel use. Most projects have a 20 year life and as Earther points out
“The findings in the new report show that the fossil fuel extraction plans for the next 10years—plans that don’t factor in any new oil, gas, or coal discoveries or shifts in demand—will lead to enough fossil fuels being dug up to emit 39 gigatons of carbon, up from 35 gigatons in 2018. That’s 53 percent higher than what’s required to keep warming within 2 degrees Celsius of pre-industrial times and 120 percent higher than a 1.5 degrees Celsius world. Put another way, humanity would likely be screwed. The production gap is projected to keep growing in 2040, setting the world on a very dangerous path.”https://earther.gizmodo.com/building-all-the-fossil-fuel-projects-already-in-the-pi-1839949666
Remember how pissed off we were [well I sure as hell was] when the report about how a few companies were actually responsible for the bulk of fossil fuel/global warming – remember – 100 corporates give us 70% of the GHG emissions:https://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2017/jul/10/100-fossil-fuel-companies-investors-responsible-71-global-emissions-cdp-study-climate-change well- there’s an even tighter nation/state cadre that controls the worlds fossil fuel production- and if you care to peruse each list: Coalhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_coal_production
NaturalGashttps://www.statista.com/statistics/264771/top-countries-based-on-natural-gas-production/
Petroleum:https://investingnews.com/daily/resource-investing/energy-investing/oil-and-gas-investing/top-oil-producing-countries/
You will be likely unsurprised that with the exception of Canada [#4Petroleum] and Germany [#9 coal...wait- Germany? “Green” Germany?...sigh ] these all have Right Wing [USA,Australia] or seriously totalitarian [Russia,Iran, Brazil etc] regimes. [Please bear with me on this quickie research- I’ve been out in my boneyard recycling old patio sliding doors for my greenhouse , there’s 6 “ of snow on the ground and I’m , like , old man….]
Which leads to the very sad reality re IPCC studies and Paris agreements and UN “Gap” reports and whatnots. The fact is that the producer nations have continued to produce ,subsidize and plan MORE production of fossil fuel use than ever.
So there’s the rub. And the clock’s ticking….
