Today is Brexit day, that is the 31st January.
So today is the day that the UK is set to leave the EU, and that time now is just hours away. At which point there is the additional threat that millions of Britons, in fact the majority of Britons who did not vote for either the Conservative Tory Party, or the majority of the UK population which did not vote to leave the EU, feel additionally cheated because they're told that they can expect to lose also their EU citizenship. So here in this regard at least there is some hope out there, as there is popular support for a lawsuit, that is an expected class action lawsuit before the European Courts of Justice in the foreseeable future to rule on that very issue, which simply asks the question, as Britain never gave you EU citizenship, how is it by them leaving the EU that they can take it away from you? Now as we are all aware EU citizenship was effectuated under the Treaty of Maastricht in 1992.
As such it seems reasonable to ask that no EU nation had the right to leave the EU until the Lisbon Treaty, which was written in 2007, how is it pray tell do tell, that when the Maastricht Treaty was effectuated that the framers thereof could have foreseen the loss of EU citizenship, one may lose their citizenship by the UK leaving the EU. When in fact in 1992 there was no provision to even leave the EU. Now I am no lawyer but there are some things even I know, which is there is a special website out there gathering signatures for this purpose, and it has well over a million people who have responded already in the affirmative on point. https://www.eucitizenship.org.uk/
So this is an issue for which there is popular support. So will there be such a class action lawsuit in the future? I think we can be hopeful that there will be such a lawsuit. I think it is also possible to be optimistic that such a lawsuit can be won. Ergo the postulate while you can take Britain out of the EU, we can expect to be hopeful that you cannot take the EU citizenship out of Britain. So as they say it is not really over until it's over and you've had your day in court. Is there any guarantee on how the court will rule? The truth is there are no guarantees in life anywhere, ever. What there is here is good reason for hope. So for lots and lots of folks out there who are feeling low today, you see there is reason for hope that we can celebrate together. On that hopeful note I will end this diary today because the only person who can take hope away from you is you, and you're way too smart to ever do anything like that to yourself. So whistle a little tune, smile a little smile, and keep hope alive and remember we're all in this with you, you are never alone.
