The other day after I voted I started feeling a bit anxious about this election. It’s getting down to the wire, it’s all getting real, it’s all on the line. What if he does this, what if he does that, what if he does this and that and the other. I had to get my head out of politics, I thought if I felt that way, maybe some of you do too. I had to escape for 10 minutes. So I started watching Car 54 Where Are You, on YouTube. And my mind wandered.
Consider TV Shows only. We’ll do movies later.
Question 1.
Think of your favorite TV shows. What house or dwelling do you wish you could live in?
For me it would be the house in the TV show The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.
I hate stairs and doors, but I love all things nautical. I would love to live in a houseboat, or a boathouse.
I know it was a set. But the opening credits show the real house which is in California. I love the house because everything in it was so real. From the nautical objects and all that wood, and her bedroom/office with the balcony, fireplace, and that long curvy couch, and it was on the beach. And that kitchen...people dream about that kitchen. Even when the episode showed the town it all looked so real, especially the baseball game episode.
The show got very good reviews from the critics at the time. It got cancelled after only two seasons due to production costs.
Harry Nilsson had a guest appearance in the last episode of season one. And the great Shirley Booth played a wonderful tarot card reading spiritualist in season two.
Anyway that’s my dream house.
I would embed a photograph, but I don’t know how. I’ve tried and tried and it never works for me. So I’ll embed an episode from season 1 that gives a good overview of the house. YouTube has all the episodes in case you want to escape into that world. This episode is called Treasure Hunt.
Question 2.
Which TV character do you wish was your best friend, next door neighbor?
My answer is Gracie Allen. I think it would be an absolute blast to live next door to her. And yes I know she wasn’t like that in real life, she was playing a character. And I love that character.
Burns and Allen was before my time. The first TV show I can remember seeing would be The Dick Van Dyke Show. However I started watching Burns and Allen episodes on YouTube.
I guess I see something in her character that is unique and refreshing. She gets to live her life on her own terms. She causes chaos and confusion without hurting anyone.
The thing that irks me about it though is, she’s always characterized in the show as being silly, or crazy, or even stupid. But I beg to differ completely. She’s the one that always gets the last laugh. She always lands on her feet. The only character that sees the genius in her character is George Burns.
For me she acts the way you wish you could if you could get away with it. I just adore her character. And even though she plays a celebrity, she’s not prideful. She has just as much fun shopping for shoes than doing anything else that day. And the thing with the hats is just too funny. I’ve been looking for that episode all night and unfortunately I can’t find it. But here’s a good episode.
So,what are your choices?
