I’m 50. I’ve been in this game a long time and have been disappointed too often. We need to work as hard as we can these last few days to get as many votes as possible.
But I bet you are like me — you are on edge right now, you can’t sleep, and you can think of nothing else except this election. I started to think about what I will do when we WIN, and golly gee, it sure did make me feel good. This isn’t a call to stop working or donating towards our victory. It’s a moment to think about the joy we will have, and the new work that will be in front of us. This victory is why we are doing the work now.
I live outside DC. Whenever this election is called, I’m taking my 12 y/o son to DC and we will celebrate. I got small USA flags to put on my car and created a playlist to blast as we drive. I want him to feel patriotic and to know the potential of our country.
Election night 2016, my then 8 y/o fell asleep on the couch with me. When I carried him to bed, he asked me who won. I told him Trump, and I lied and said, “it’ll be OK.” When I left his room, I broke down in tears. Not this year. We’re taking our country back — for our children, for our immigrant neighbors, for our LBGTQ family, for our international partners, for communities of color, for our Mother Earth, for justice and the (new and improved) American Way!
If you’re feeling stressed, take a moment and write what you will do to celebrate our victory: be it online, safely in public, lobbying Biden and Democrats on specific issues, etc.
Yo fam, we got this! Believe, and work to make it true.
