Greetings from Ferndale, Michigan, a small, bright-blue suburb of Detroit, riding the 8 Mile border. I normally write one of these to talk about my voting experience and report from my local polling place. As some of you might have noted, this is a not a normal year.
I voted about three weeks ago, receiving my absentee ballot in the mail. I filled it out and walked up to the drop box outside city hall and put it in. The next day, I got a message confirming it was received.
I’m guessing that most of my town took the same route that I did, and the great majority of residents here have already voted by mail / dropbox. We have plenty of polling stations, and on my errands today I passed mine (the library) three times. The lot was jammed full each time, but no line out the door. There were also a steady stream of people going across the lot to drop their ballots in the dropbox outside of city hall. The only person outside distributing info was a candidate for local district judge.
Enjoy some of the more interesting lawn signs I’ve seen around town on our rambles.

Besides the national races, I’m most closely following Dave Coulter’s attempt to win a full term as Oakland County Commissioner. Dave was mayor of my city for years, and was appointed to fill the commissioner’s seat when our old, long-time, Republican county commissioner passed away in office. Dave would be the first elected Democrat to the office in a long time, and the first openly gay man to hold the position in charge of Michigan’s most prosperous county, which has trended increasingly blue over the years as educated professionals flock to high-tech jobs.
