I was watching CNN yesterday and Dana Bash did an interview with Markwayne Mullin, congressman from Oklahoma. Some of the highlights:
Regarding the $2000 President Trump demanded be in the Stimulus Bill:
“The President was just very clear that that’s what he wanted and as you know and I know, the president doesn’t back down from his words ...” (Mullins said this with a straight face).
”If he said that that’s what he wanted, and he said he has good news, I would make the assumption that that’s what he’s received … “
Stuff that bothers Mullins: If we can spend 23 million on the Kennedy Center — which is closed, and we can’t do $2000 to U.S. citizens there’s a problem there …”
Dana asked how he could face his constituents about voting against the covid relief bill when many of them might be unemployed or in danger of being evicted. Mullin’s answer was that Oklahoma’s been open for business, not like California or Massachusetts. (Average Daily Cases of Covid per 100,000 in the last 7 days California — 97, Massachusetts — 57.2, Oklahoma — 68.8, covid.cdc.gov/… ) He said his constituents are glad he didn’t vote for the covid relief bill.
He is concerned that every tax payer will have $6200 added to what they will owe toward the debt if this bill becomes law. Never mind that he voted for the 2017 Tax Overhaul Bill which has added at least a trillion to the National Debt.
She asked him if he would vote to override President Trump’s vote of the National Defense and Authorization Act which Mullins had voted for. “I will not be voting to override the president’s veto … President Trump is the Commander in Chief. He has his reasons to veto it.”
Here’s the interview. I have to appreciate that Dana Bash didn’t scream or throw things.
