I know that headline is gonna piss a lotta people off. But help me out, guys, because I’m genuinely stuck on this. Here’s my analysis, and I welcome any commenter who can give a third and better choice for that headline.
Bernie is running on a platform eschewing corporate donations. In fact, he excoriates his opponents who accept corporate donations - even donations from working-class voters who happen to work at major corporations. Yet he’s running for the Democratic nomination, and if he wins it he gets access to the DNC war chest, which undeniably is stuffed with corporate donations.
What happens then?
Does he make use of that war chest? If so, he’s a hypocrite, criticizing his rivals for using corporate cash to run against him, but perfectly happy to make use of the lovely corporate treasure that the Democratic party has raised. A party he doesn’t even belong to, btw.
Does he forgo that war chest? If so, he’s a fool, bringing a water gun to a knife fight; and taking the Democratic party down with him, not to mention the hopes of a desperate nation. We may not approve, but money talks in politics — literally — to buy ads to spread your message, not to mention to pay for electioneering organization. Possibly he could raise enough in small donations to overcome the massive resources of trump, the RNC, and the numerous rightwing superPACs, but alas, that’s an extreme long shot.
In fact, why is an Independent running for the Democratic nomination anyway? If that “I” after his name is so damned important to him, then he should run as an Independent. Seems to me that if he wants the support of the Democratic party organization, including the money it’s raised, then he should join the Democratic party.
