My husband and I are self employed and we are still 3 years out from Medicare….so it’s on to the Healthcare.gov exchange for us! Generally, the application process has been fairly easy and smooth. This year is another story entirely.
Nothing much has changed from last year to this one, income is about the same, etc. but for some reason this year they needed extra documentation. I had to prove citizenship, SSN and income. Documents for citizenship included a passport so I sent a copy of my passport. This appears to have been accepted without question.
One of the documents recommended to prove SSN was a copy of my Social Security card. Suggested documentation for my small business included a Schedule C. I have been paying taxes for 42 years in the United States, it’s not as if my presence in this country is something new.
I received a letter yesterday informing me that the documents they recommended I send were JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH. When I read the letter I received back to the very patient young man on the phone where it explicitly stated the documents I sent were acceptable, he had no response for me. I asked him if I copy of my SS card was not good enough to prove my SSN, then what would be? He had no answer for this, just that my documentation was insufficient. Same with the Schedule C for my small business. I sent my 2018 Schedule C which specifically proves the income I claimed. Again, NOT GOOD ENOUGH but he had no idea what else I could provide that would get me over the finish line.
I realize the intent is to get me to give up. Fortunately (for me, not for them), I have the time and inclination to work my way through this Kafka-esque new system.
Anyone else run into similar problems?
