Work's gotten interesting. We have a point system for absenteeism which is the major way people get fired (too many points and you're out). Senior management (aka people way above what I know) have decreed that, with the current coronoavirus issue, people who have symptoms of it are to stay home with zero points against them. This makes sense to me. If you're telling people to stay home if they're coughing but also penalize them...you just get a lot of workers trying to stifle their coughs at work.
I'm not working at home, though, because we're first responders as blood donation specialists. We've canceled over 22 blood drives in the next few weeks, and that's a small, local Ohio center. Nationwide, we're gonna feel that loss of blood from cancelled blood drives in a month or so. We'll be giving away major incentives and be open on Sunday for the next few weeks to offset that.
My suggestion for y'all as someone working in a blood center:
1)Stay home if you're sick!
2)Wash y'all's hands!
3)If you're not sick or at risk definitively of coronoavirus, please donate blood. Washington State is already feeling it, and we'll feel it nationwide as this spreads. It's not the virus itself that eats up blood, but the lack of donations through quarantine, canceled blood drives, and sickness. IF YOU ARE SICK DO NOT DONATE. We've been told to even reject folks who say they're sniffling from allergies to keep things safe. If you're at risk, don't.
If you can donate, please PLEASE do! People still need blood in this crisis. People get in accidents, have cancer, have genetic issues, etc. Flattening the curve is about caring for them on top of the virus's victims. If you feel healthy enough to donate, please do to offset the shortage we'll be feeling in the next month or so.
