As a black mother, I have had enough. Chitown Kev’s current trending diary resonates with me as well.
Yesterday, my husband and I called our millennial children who live in Oakland and advised them NOT to protest. Their response was that they were “sitting tight”, which is a southern euphemism for “waiting to see how this plays out”. Growing up in the south, we stress having both book sense and common sense, and they realized that something about the protests was going awry. Plus, my children are from Houston and grew up in Houston’s Third Ward, the same neighborhood where George Floyd was raised. My husband and I still live here. This is our community, and this is how we, George’s friends, classmates and family, protested today.
Solidarity is one thing, but cos playing resistance when there is literally nothing at stake for you personally and as we say in the black south “doing the fool” is another. Join us in outrage. Join us in despair. Join us in fighting for change. But, please, carpetbagger crazies, stay away.
