This year's Democratic convention is scheduled to happen in August of this year. It was postponed
from July due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The convention will be taking place in Milwaukee, WI.
Unfortunately, the pandemic is still ongoing and it is very likely that the Democrats may have a virtual convention this year.
I am suggesting an alternative arrangement for the convention.
Since about 50000 guests are expected at this convention, I am suggesting that instead of hosting the convention in Milwaukee or virtually, The DNC should plan to host the convention in about 10 different cities in addition to Milwaukee. The party can have about 10000 people in Milwaukee and have about 5000 people in each of the other cities. The other venues will be connected to Milwaukee by video conferencing and other technological infrastructure.
The advantages of these are manifold.
First of all, the party gets to have its convention and the attention that comes with it. They also get to have the convention and observe social distancing at the same time. Many cities are hurting right now during this pandemic and by spreading the convention around the Democrats are able to help these cities. It also gives Democrats the opportunity to spread the campaign around to many states.
Although there is not a lot of time to prepare for this, there are lots of empty hotel rooms around the country now who could benefit from these mini conventions and potentially give the DNC good deals. And I think a lot of cities will be open to the idea and will help to fast track the necessary arrangements to make it happen.
Again, the Democratic Party gets to spread its message in a responsible manner.
The cities could be chosen to maximize the media and political impact.
If successful, it could serve as a model for future National Conventions.
