The Republican Party of Wisconsin held it’s state convention today… indoors… in Green Bay, which was an early COVID-19 hot spot and still has the 2nd highest number of cases per capita in WI.
And of course there was hardly a face mask in sight.
(Fast-forwarding thru the crowd shots, there were maybe 10 people wearing masks, but some might have been staff for the venue.)
Anyway, here’s what you came here to see: Congressman Glenn Grothman (R-WI-06) winding up to sing the praises of Donald John Trump and... failing to get through his first sentence before blasting attendees with his freedom spittle (video should start at 47:14):
He probably thinks he did a good job because he tried to cover his mouth, but there’s a ton of real estate around his fist that could’ve been covered… with a mask. And then he proceeds to slather his liberty mucous all over the podium, which other speakers all definitely touched with bare hands. I’d also like to note that he was on an elevated stage, which likely allowed his bodily fluids to cover some extra distance.
(I have no idea whether Grothman is carrying COVID, but neither does he. That’s the point, of course. And I’m sure he wasn’t the only one in that room to cough, or cheer, or whatever… and all of them will now be fanning out across Wisconsin’s 72 counties. Super.)
Grothman then struggles to get through the rest of his speech, which was intended to arm conservatives with persuasive arguments to convince all their relatives and neighbors to vote for Trump.
It’s Glenn Grothman, so I’m not gonna fact check the entire thing. But I will note that his list of Trump’s “accomplishments” is pretty darn sad:
- We have fewer immigrants now! And we treat them worse! Yay!
- Weirdly, his only acknowledgement of “the COVID problem” is to claim that it allowed Trump to “shut down the border more” and allow even fewer immigrants
- Trump has apparently fixed everything that was wrong with the VA?
- NAFTA 2.0 is soooo much better than NAFTA 1.0.
- Trump “stood up to the drug companies” so now there’s cheap generic drugs available for everybody… but also, we need to bring more drugs in from Canada
- Welfare is “bankrupting the country” and “causing the breakdown of our families, causing parents to be bad role models.” Trump’s work requirements fix all that.
- US oil production is up.
- Murders were down for 2 years, entirely because Trump “stood with the police.”
That is… less than inspiring.
Here’s to Glenn getting promoted to run the RNC messaging shop!
If you’re a glutton for punishment, you can watch the whole WIGOP convention here: Part 1 & Part 2
And speaking of punishment, here’s a handy list of just some of the other dumb things Grothman has said as he climbed the WIGOP political ladder:
“You could argue that money is more important for men. I think a guy in their first job, maybe because they expect to be a breadwinner someday, may be a little more money-conscious. To attribute everything to a so-called bias in the workplace is just not true.”
“Let's be honest, giving government employees off has nothing to do with honoring Martin Luther King Day and it's just about giving state employees another day off... I'd be shocked if you can find anybody doing service [on MLK Day]"
“Does the University [of Wisconsin] hate white men?”
"In this country, can we continue to exist if we have a government that is actively discouraging businesses from hiring men? Our country is not going to survive if we continue this war on men."
“Of course, almost no black people today care about Kwanzaa — just white left-wingers who try to shove this down black people’s throats in an effort to divide Americans.”
“Did anyone even know what homosexuality was in high school in 1975? I don’t remember any discussion about that at the time. There were a few guys who would make fun of a few effeminate boys, but that’s a different thing than homosexuality. Homosexuality was not on anyone’s radar. And that’s a good thing.”
"Quite frankly, it's scandalous that lawyers are leading people to believe that the lead paint in these houses is responsible for the increases in the (lead) levels in their blood.”
"I think there is pressure, sadly, on black politicians to become race-hustlers. I think it is a lot easier today for a black politician to say that the problems on the north side of Milwaukee are because of racism than the problems are because of the breakdown of the family."
“The Left and the social welfare establishment want children born out of wedlock because they are far more likely to be dependent on the government.”
There are 3 Democrats vying in the Aug 11th primary to take on Grothman: Matt Boor, Michael Beardsley, and Jessica King.

Just noticed this totally-not-an-afterthougtht flyer was handed out to convention attendees: “If you are not feeling well and experiencing health concerns like shortness of breath, fever, coughing, etc, please do not attend the convention” ...Glenn.
Also those “spaced out” chairs were maybe 3ft apart, and got scooched closer together as the day wore on.
