POLL: 60% More Likely to Vote for U.S. Senate Candidate Supporting Background Checks
TONIGHT: Gabby Giffords & James Mackler virtual event at 6 PM CT. RSVP>>
NASHVILLE — New polling data released yesterday by Giffords PAC confirms Tennesseans overwhelmingly support expanding background checks and are much more likely to vote for a candidate for U.S. Senate committed to doing so. The poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling (PPP) on behalf of Giffords PAC, was released ahead of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords’ virtual stop in Tennessee on her Road to Universal Background Checks Tour to states with competitive races that are on the path to electing a Gun Safety Senate Majority. On Wednesday, Giffords will appear with decorated Iraq war combat veteran James Mackler, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, and Shaundelle Brooks, the mother of Akilah DaSilva who was killed in the 2018 Waffle House shooting.
“James Mackler knows what it means to be a gun safety champion. He understands that owning a gun comes with responsibilities and we can protect that right while keeping firearms out of the wrong hands,” said former Congresswoman Giffords. “The time for inaction is over. The time to raise our voices is now. It’s time to elect leaders like James Mackler to fight for an America where gun violence no longer plagues families and communities.”
“We can never accept our crisis of gun violence as a normal part of everyday life, and we need senators to say so,” said James Mackler. “I’m a military veteran and a gun owner and I know we can protect our 2nd Amendment rights and keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. Closing glaring loopholes while extending background checks to all gun sales to make our communities safer is supported by gun owners like me, Congresswoman Giffords, and 80% of Tennesseans. It’s been more than 500 days since bipartisan legislation to do just that was passed in the House without seeing a vote in Mitch McConnell’s Senate, so it’s time to elect new leaders and a new Senate Majority. I’m so honored to have Congresswoman Giffords and Giffords PAC on our team, and investing in Tennessee as part of the pathway to electing a new majority. We’ll win the race for Tennessee’s open U.S. Senate seat when everyone wanting change joins our team to make it happen.”
Tonight, July 22 at 6PM CT, James Mackler will join Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, Giffords Law Center Executive Director Robyn Thomas, and Shaundelle Brooks for Giffords PAC’s Road To Universal Background Checks Tour virtual stop in Tennessee. Click here to RSVP for the free event.

James Mackler, 48, joined the U.S. Army after 9/11 to do more and serve in a time of crisis, serving in Iraq as a Black Hawk helicopter pilot as a Screaming Eagle in the 101st Airborne Division. He later protected sexual assault survivors and prosecuted criminals as a U.S. Army JAG attorney. James is running for U.S. Senate for the same reasons he joined the army — to do more and serve all Tennesseans in a time of crisis.
Tennessee can’t afford another rubber-stamp joining Marsha Blackburn in the U.S. Senate. One is bad enough. Help us fight back today →
