This will be short:
I am surprised we are talking, thinking, and lamenting about the filibuster even to this day.
In 2013 the filibuster was weakened because the Republicans would not let Obama do anything (this will be repeated for Biden if we let them).
And then in 2017 it was weakened further by McConnell himself. The filibuster is now small and weak and ready to be, as Grover N said, drowned in a bathtub.
It’s really easy to do: Any senator could walk up to the lectern and say:
“I’m not sure why we are even talking about the filibuster. Didn’t McConnell end it in 2017 to appoint Gorsuch to the Supreme Court? Truthfully, if 51 votes is enough to stop discussion about putting a person on the Supreme Court, with a lifetime appointment that will affect every single citizen of these great United States; then I see no reason that 51 votes (counting Vice President Harris---so freaking great to say that) is not enough to pass an Aid Package to those same citizen of this amazing country who are in desperate need of help during these tough, troubling months of epidemic spread and economic contraction.”
“Shouldn’t we in this Senate help those citizens crying out for aid? I say Yes! Or should we say no to these Americans because the Senate arbitrarily need more votes from Senate members than we would need to elect a Supreme Court Justice for life? I say No! Once Mitch McConnell decided to pick and choose the power of the filibuster, he wrote and signed it’s obituary.”
“McConnell killed the filibuster in 2017, so why are we still talking about it today instead of doing the people’s work of getting this great nation and it’s amazing citizens back on their feet?”
