Wisconsin has its own version of a Cyber-Ninjas-style “investigation” into the 2020 election results going on right now. It’s a disgraceful, disingenuous shitshow all the way down, but one recently-revealed detail made my jaw hit the floor.
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that Michael Gableman, the special counsel in charge of the “investigation” and all-around stain on the legal profession, is running things out of the Brookfield, WI offices of Mohrman, Kaardal & Erickson.
I’m pretty familiar with Brookfield, and just out of curiosity I googled Mohrman, Kaardal & Erickson to see where this office was. I was greeted by this banner at the top of their webpage…
In case you can’t read the image, the banner reads:
If you are interested in donating to Derek Chauvin’s legal defense fund, his mother has set up a legal defense fund at the following link: [not typing it out]
Any donations will not be tax deductible, and may have gift tax implications under federal or state law. Please consult an attorney if you have concerns about the tax implications of any potential donation. Donations may be made anonymously.
Sure enough, Mohrman, Kaardal & Erickson are representing Derek Chauvin as he appeals his conviction for murdering George Floyd.
Of course, everyone, including Chauvin, is entitled to hire legal representation.
But why, out of all the office space in the state of Wisconsin, would Gableman choose to shack up with this particular crew? None of the lawyers he’s hired for his taxpayer-funded “investigation” appear to work for this firm, so that’s not it… (Although their blog posts kinda make it look like they’re functioning as Gableman’s press secretary.)
Oh, I guess this is why:
Republicans filed a lawsuit Tuesday asking the Wisconsin Supreme Court to block certification of the presidential election results even as a recount over President-elect Joe Biden’s win over President Donald Trump is ongoing....
The Wisconsin lawsuit was filed by attorney Erick Kaardal, a former Minnesota Republican Party official who also represented rapper Kanye West in his unsuccessful lawsuit attempting to get on the ballot in Wisconsin.
Yup. Real credible bunch of folks there. I can see why Gableman would appreciate their company. And since Kaardal was behind some of the O.G. Big Lie cases, I’m sure Gableman can save the taxpayers some money by copying-and-pasting.
I suppose the Gableman-Kaardal-Chauvin connection is just a really grotesque bit of trivia, but seeing that “Please give money to Derek Chauvin” banner when I was looking for info on Wisconsin’s election “investigation” was just too surreal not to share.
If you want more substance on who Gableman is and what he’s actually doing, I recommend these diaries from Aldous J Pennyfarthing and Puddytat, as well as coverage from UpNorthNews, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, and the WI State Journal.
And for the headline-truthers… Mohrman, Kaardal & Erickson is a small firm with two offices: one in Minnesota and one in Wisconsin. I imagine most of the actual work on Chauvin’s appeal is being done out of the Minnesota office, but you get the point. Headlines are hard to write.
