Quick backstory: 1. As you know, we have severely gerrymandered maps in NC. 2. Filing for US congressional districts, and the NC state house and senate, was supposed to start today at noon. 3. Three lawsuits were filed at the trial level last week asking for a TRO, and the relief requested was denied three times (the latest time was this past Friday), but the cases were consolidated for appeal.
Current story: The Plaintiffs appealed to the NC Court of Appeals for a stay, and the NC Court of Appeals granted it just after 11 am today, BRIEFLY. There will be no filing for Congressional seats or state house and senate seats, but filing for other things, like local races, senate, judicial, and governor, will continue.. Both sides have to have written briefs in by noon on Thursday. Whatever this three judge panel of the Court of Appeals does, the cases are certainly headed for our state Supreme Court, where dems hold a slim 4-3 majority.
